Dunia

Dunia, Blooming Fire's recent EP, is a psychedelic tribute to earth. Following a girl's journey from a technology led environment into nature, this album straddles many genres including psychedelic rock, reggae, and hip hop. The listener is taken through a journey that feels akin to the enlightenment of artists in the 60s and 70s, experimenting with new sounds and textures that heighten the musical experience.

Blooming Fire is a group of musicians who consider themselves activists, using their voices for justice in both their artwork and their lives. Supporters of equal rights, the group has raised money for homeless initiatives, taking objective steps toward a better future for everyone. They are also vocal advocates for sustainability, performing for causes like Standing Rock and the California Fire Foundation.

We're eased into the EP with the title song, "Dunia," starting in a trance-like moment that is awakened by upbeat drums. At times, the vocal processing feels ethereal and light, in contrast to the consistent beat and electric guitar solos. The rap sections have a clarity and raw feeling, lending a new texture to the mix. "Blame It All" starts with a voicemail, underscored with a resonant electronic atmosphere. Once the call ends, we're introduced to a psychedelic reggae groove, and one of my favorite standout choices, a saxophone feature. Lyrically, the album asks many questions, often utilizing wordplay to invert meaning and draw attention to intent. The song "Freedom" takes this concept and puts it under a microscope, meditating on the idea of Freedom and how it is often obscured. Tying it all together, "Bless My Heart" gently surrounds the listener with a celestial quality and plenty of questions to contemplate. The entire record has a underlying current of awareness, forcing the listener to slow down and ruminate on the things that go unquestioned in our day to day lives. Thankfully this journey of self inventory feels like a meditative party instead of being a heavy experience.

In addition to their EP release, Blooming Fire has also created a visual experience to accompany Dunia that brings another sensory element to the work. Dunia is out now on Spotify and Apple Music, but if you would like to see Blooming Fire live, follow them on BandsInTown to be notified of future shows!
