"I <3 Olivia" starts out with an almost spoken vocal line, feeling like emotionally charged dialogue with electric guitar underscoring. Byrne expresses lyrically how she doesn't actually resent herself for loving her past partner. She seems to convey the situation as her current self looking back, hoping that young Olivia "can escape" the situation. Sound wise, the production of the song is fairly straightforward, utilizing midi synthesizer in addition to the electric guitar and vocals. Byrne's use of sawtooth waves adds a heightened heat to the echoey, chamber-like resonance that is consistent throughout the song and vocals. By juxtaposing the direct and sharp lyrics with ethereal underscoring, the overall outcome is well balanced with depth and contrast. All in all, "I <3 Olivia" has everything you could want from an impassioned and intense break up anthem.
