Would You Let the Light In

In lieu of September being Suicide Awareness month, My Friends Call Me Mel's latest single "Would You Let the Light In" is an honest, open look into the singer's journey with mental health. It takes a lot of self-inventory and the possible re-kindling of trauma to write about one's experiences, so this inside look is truly a gift to the listener. Both a gift of trust and insight, "Would You Let the Light In" explores the experience of supporting yourself and the people around you.

Simply knowing someone cares and supports you goes a long way, but it's very easy to lose sight of that and close yourself off to the people in your life. "Would You Let the Light In" feels like an earnest, heartfelt act of care -- asking someone, whether it be yourself or someone else, to open up again. The lyric also acknowledges how difficult and scary it can be to let the light back in, which is important when discussing a topic of this complexity. It's a delicate scenario to write about so I appreciate the way my friends call me Mel lets the simplicity of the message resonate through repetition. Genre-wise, the song feels akin to popular indie artist releases from Maggie Rogers, MUNA, The Paper Kites, or Ryn Weaver. The vocals are smooth and resonant, with both electronic and live instrumentation supporting the build of the song. Speaking of instrumentation, the piano really stands out, especially towards the end, and personifies the vulnerability of the scenario incredibly well. Overall, "Would You Let the Light In" handles the tender subject of mental health with gentle grace and understanding.

"Would You Let the Light In" by my friends call me Mel is available today on Spotify and Apple Music.
